Safety & Crisis Protocol
Last updated October 21, 2026
If you’re in crisis right now:
- Call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or chat at 988lifeline.org.
- If you’re in immediate danger, call 911.
What Juniper is, and isn’t
Juniper is an AI that helps you journal. She is not a person, a therapist, or a crisis counselor, and calls are not monitored live by a person. A Call a Day is for adults 18 and older, and may not be suitable for some minors.
What happens if you mention self-harm or being unsafe
Juniper is designed to notice when someone mentions thoughts of suicide or self-harm, signs of an eating disorder, being hurt by someone, or being a danger to someone else. When that happens, she:
- slows down and responds calmly and with care, without ending the call abruptly;
- doesn’t ask for details about methods;
- shares crisis resources: call or text 988, chat at 988lifeline.org, or call 911 in an emergency;
- offers to end the call so you can reach out right away, and respects your choice.
After the call, we may send you a text with the same resources. That text never includes what you said.
How we detect safety concerns
- Juniper is instructed to recognize safety concerns during the call.
- After each call, the transcript is checked again for anything that was missed.
- During the beta, an authorized team member may review flagged calls to improve how Juniper responds. We are not an emergency service and can’t promise a personal follow-up.
- We test these responses before every update to Juniper.
Reporting
As required by law, we keep a count of how often crisis resources are shared. These counts contain no personal information.
